Action Plan An Action Plan is a plan for making a teaching change that will enhance your students understanding of mathematics. Describe your teaching situation Name Dean Klepec
School Okanogan Middle school
Teaching assignment Middle School Math
Describe your student population (approximate number, ethnicity, language, etc) I have about 120 students that I see per day primarly caucation. I also have about 15% hispanic and 15% native American
Describe your teaching change What teaching change (instruction, assessment, materials) you like to improve?Explain how your teaching change will improve your students’ ability to learn mathematics. Also, describe possible ways that technology might assist you in making your teaching change.
We have a new text this year at the middle school so my focus this year is to implement this new series. Set Teaching Goals Identify at least two teaching goals (measurable accomplishment that if met would enable your students to learn mathematics more effectively).
To get familiar with the new text and match it up with the current standards. I also want to develope at least 1 group worthy tasks for each unit that I teach based on the new text. I also want to implement more group work in my classes so that students can work collaboratively and efficiently. Describe Teaching Actions Describe at least two things you are going to do as a teacher to accomplish your teaching goals. These actions may or may not use technology but if they do not use technology, explain why technology is or is not the best teaching tool for your teaching change.
I am just going to spend time getting familiar with the new text when they arrive. I will also collaborate with the other math teachers at our school to develope the group worthy tasks that we have began to develope. I will spend much of the beginning of the year helping my students develope group expectations and rules so that they can work well with each other. Because I am going to be very overwelmed with just getting familiar with the new text and have very limited and out of date technology I will not be able to focus on it as much. Assess Teaching Goals Identify how you are going to assess each of your teaching goals (simple method of collecting information to see if your teach goals was met).
The first goal I can assess by looking back at my lessons that I am developing for each unit. The second goal I will asses by how students perform on the group tasks and discuss with students wheather the task correlated with the unit we were teaching. The last goal will be assessed by keeping data on the group tasks and checking their progress as the year goes on. Timeline Outline a general timeline that identifies when you are going to use your actions, collect your assessment data
My teaching actions will start before the year begins and continue throughout the year. I will also collect data throughout the year to check progress. I hope to have the groupworthy tasks completed well ahead of when the students will be doing that unit, but I will continue with them throughout the year trying to develope more that 1 per unit. I would like the kids to be working effectively and efficiently in groups by the end of the first quarter. Reflection Write a reflection on the results of your action plan. What was difficult? What worked well? How did your students react to the changes you made? What was the impact on student learning?
